World Cup Spots Up for Grabs As Teams Prepare for Africa Women Cup of Nations Quarterfinal Matches

The quarterfinal matches of the ongoing 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) are slated for Wednesday, July 13 and Thursday, July, 14, as eight teams compete not only for a berth in the semifinals.

Only four teams will qualify to represent Africa at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC) scheduled to be held next year.

African Football reports that Zambia will trade tackles with Senegal in the first match of the knockout phase inside the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

Shortly after, it will be the turn of Morocco and Botswana at Stade Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.

None of the four teams in action on Wednesday have qualified for the Women's World Cup before.

On Thursday, the first match will involve Cameroon and Nigeria at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, followed by South Africa tackling Tunisia at Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat.

Eto’o sends inspiring messages to Indomitable Lionesses

Meanwhile, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, has congratulated the female national team after securing a place in the last of eight of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

Cameroon reached the quarter-finals after beating Tunisia 2-0 in their final Group B game.

Eto'o took to social media to celebrate the achievement of the team as they set up a mouthwatering clash against record champions Nigeria.

Thembi Kgatlana to miss rest of AWCON 2022

Sports Brief earlier reported that star Banyana Banyana striker Thembi Kgatlana will miss the rest of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.

She was carried off in a stretcher during South Africa's 1-0 victory against Botswana last night.

The 26-year-old Kgatlana stepped awkwardly during the second half, with this injury later confirmed to be a ruptured Achilles tendon.
