A Zimbabwean billionaire has rubbished reports that he was lining up a bid to buy SuperSport United.

Strive Masiyiwa, the businessman in question, not only denied the reports but also explained that he had never even heard of SuperSport before.

Rumours have been circulating for the third year in a row that Matsatsantsa would be sold before the start of the season, Sports24 reported.

CEO Stan Matthews shot down the reports, saying that he was tired of having to talk about it every year. He added that he would be taking legal action against the publication spreading the fake news.

Masiviwa also questioned the level of journalism which led to the story making headlines, The Citizen reported.

“What surprised and saddened me was that a self-respecting journalist would imagine a story and simply proceed to write about it as though it were real,” he said.

“That is just so scary and a complete disgrace to this very important profession of journalism,” Masiviwa added.

Masiviwa explained that over the last few weeks he saw a lot of social media posts that he made a bid for the club, but that he never actually heard of them before.

He continued that he wouldn’t buy any sports team, no matter the price because he was not into the business of sport.

SuperSport United Football Club has firmly put to bed rumours that the club was up for sale.
