The first half was a relatively dull affair, with both sides having moments but not really creating chances with it.

The second half was far from a dull affair as Sundowns ramped up the pressure.

Cassius Mailula broke the deadlock at the hour mark, scoring one of the most bizarre goals scored. Riandre Vries fired a shot on target, which the Pirates keeper palmed upwards. The ball came back down and bounced twice off the crossbar before Mailula headed in from close range.

Mailula made it two just ten minutes later when he calmly finished from close range. Mailula latched onto a brilliant through ball and waited for the keeper to commit before finding the back of the net.

Pirates were frustrated in terms of chances for most of the game, and even their kit manager, Banzi Mvithi, was frustrated with the referee’s decisions. Mvithi was shown two yellow cards on the bench for criticising the official.

Sundowns were lucky to not go down to ten men in the 71st minute when their keeper, Holomo Mopeli, lost his cool. Mopeli collided with Pirates Mpumelelo Ndaba and after getting up from the pitch, he rushed to attack the Pirates man. The referee rushed to pull him away, but Mopeli attempted to push the referee away as well.

His teammates eventually were able to calm him down, and he avoided being booked.

Pirates did get a goal back in the 92nd minute due to an own goal, but they left it much too late as Sundowns hung on for the win.

Excitement rises as the DStv Diski Shield returns to action this weekend in Johannesburg

The DStv Diski Shield will have new champions this season after the reigning champions Golden Arrows finished outside the top eight last season.

Mamelodi Sundowns' quest for the title will not be easy as they will face Orlando Pirates in the quarterfinal.

Kaizer Chiefs vs SuperSport United is also a crunch fixture in the quarter-final stages.
