Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has broken his silence after he liked an Instagram post claiming Cristiano Ronaldo is upset with the club over a pay cut.

The Englishman sparked controversy with his social media activity, with some United fans hitting out at the centre-back for appearing to address a private club issue.

According to the Daily Mail, the Instagram post was made by football outlet, SportBible, who posted a picture of Ronaldo alongside a caption explaining that he is 'reportedly upset with the 25% wage cut given to Manchester United players' at the end of the season.

Hawkeyed social media users were quick to note Maguire's reaction to the post, with the United defender's move earning him fresh criticism from supporters.

The United skipper has now admitted that he indeed liked the post, divulging to BBC Sport that he immediately removed it because he had clicked in error.

Maguire's social media blunder came at a time Ronaldo is facing an uncertain future with Man United, barely a year after he rejoined them.

The Portuguese talisman is said to have requested the club to allow him to depart the club this summer should they get the right offer.

Man United ready to offload Ronaldo

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Manchester United are reportedly willing to offload Cristiano Ronaldo this summer after the Portuguese talisman asked to leave.

Ronaldo is understood to have handed in a transfer request as he pushes for an Old Trafford exit.

Reports indicate that the Portuguese star informed Man United chiefs that they should let him go if they find the right offer from suitors.
