Desiree Ellis who is the head coach of the South African women national team has explained that her wards prevented the Super Falcons of Nigeria from playing their free flowing football.

Many Nigerian football lovers were disappointed on Monday night, 4 July, when the Super Falcons started their campaign at the 2022 African Women Nations Cup on a 2-1 defeat to South Africa.

Before the game, NFF president Amaju Pinnick visited the camp of the Super Falcons where he urged the Nigerian players to make sure that they soar ahead of their opponents.

However, things did not work for the Super Falcons as expected and they had to even score their consolation goal at the death against South Africa.

According to the reports on Soccernet and Daily Post, Desiree Ellis explained that she ordered her girls to stop the Super Falcons from flowing the ball freely.

“We knew we can force them to make mistakes at the back which they did, the players deliver our plans.”

As things stand now, the Super Falcons of Nigeria must beat Botswana and Burundi to have chance of qualifying for the next round.

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Bayana Bayana of South Africa again showed they are ready to overthrow Nigeria as the Queens of Africa football after an outstanding opening game victory against the Super Falcons.

Bayana Bayana cruised to a 2-1 victory against the 9-time African champions who were without rhythm as they were dominant for the most part of the game.

Two quick goals in the second half from Jermaine Seoposenwe in the 60th minute and Hildah Magaia three minutes later gave South Africa a comfortable lead against the Super Falcons after a disappointing goalless first half.

Seoposenwe latched on to a deflected ball in the box to shock Nigeria who were tagged as favourites before the game while Magaia converted after she was played through on goal.
