MFM FC has become the first team to be relegated from the Nigeria Professional Football League for the 2021/22 season after they suffered a surprise home loss to Niger Tornadoes.
The Lagos State team needed to win against their rivals in order to keep their hopes of beating the drop alive but were stunned 2-1 by Niger Tornadoes in front of their home support.
The League Management Company (LMC) confirmed MFM FC’s relegation from the NPFL with two matchdays still remaining in the 2021/22 campaign.

MFM are bottom of the league table with just 36 points from 36 games played and are 9 points off the safe zone but can only garner 6 points with just two games left in the season.
According to Brila, the relegation of the Lagos State team brings to an end their six years stay in Nigeria’s top-flight football, which has seen MFM also participate in the CAF Champions League.
Katsina United, Dakkada United and Heartland battling the drop
Meanwhile, three other teams are still fighting to stay up in the Nigeria Professional Football League following the relegation of MFM FC.
According to Soccernet, Kastina United, Heartland and Dakkada United could still be relegated from the NPFL as all three teams currently lie in the relegation zone with 45, 44, and 43 points, respectively.

Multiple NPFL champions, Kano Pillars also stand a chance to get relegated from the league as they have just 45 points also with Kastina United but possess a better goal difference.
Nigerian league coaches want the introduction of VAR in NPFL
Earlier, Sports Brief reported the coaches of Gombe United and Kano Pillars have called for the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Both managers say the introduction will help improve officiating in the league as the world continues to deploy technology to properly monitor matches.
The call was made shortly after both teams clashed in their Match Day 20 of the 2021/2022 NPFL fixture which was played at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe.
