Sunday Oliseh Says Mikel Obi Has No Quality of an Offensive Midfielder, Names His Preferred Player

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has stated that he would rather play Wilfred Ndidi in the defensive midfield position instead of former Chelsea star Mikel Obi.

Oliseh delivered the blockbuster remarks while reviewing his book Audacity to Refuse during a special podcast on YouTube channel ATHLST hosted by Matthew Edafe famously known as Mr. Elegbete.

The former Juventus midfielder reiterated that he remains blunt when it comes to saying things and said Mikel was not an offensive midfielder.

Oliseh said:

“He’s a player who has done some good with Chelsea, but when you’re talking about him playing as a…he’s not an offensive midfielder.
“My man here (Emmanuel Babayaro) knows me well that I’m blunt when it comes to say the things when it comes to it.
“Offensive midfielders have certain qualifies, he doesn’t have any of it. But as regards defensive midfielder, I think he’s useful, but I wouldn’t play him. I would play Ndidi."

Oliseh who last played for Belgian side Genk finally explained some certain qualities a midfielder must possess. He added:

“A defensive midfielder wins balls without making fouls. You have to be very good at aerial balls. You have to have some control to help others. I would prefer to play someone like Ndidi than to play him.

“I like to watch him play. I like his style of play.”

Mikel recounts how Mourinho converted him to the defensive midfield role

Having won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Europa League, and the Champions League during his 372 appearances for the Blues, Mikel disclosed that Jose Mourinho thought a big name like Joe Cole should play such a role at the club.

He said as per Pulse Sports:

"And then going to Chelsea, obviously with those big-name players, massive players, you have to kind of give something.
"And then, he [Mourinho] looked at it and said, I can't really get you to play it [No.10 because we have the likes of Joe Cole playing there.
“We have massive names playing there, you’ll have to change something, and we had a chat about it.”

Meanwhile, Sports Brief reported that Oliseh stated that the talent of Wilson Oruma helped the Dream Team to win the gold medal at the football event of the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

Nigeria stunned the world coming from 3-1 down to beat Brazil 4-3 in the semifinal of the competition where Kanu Nwankwo equalised in the closing seconds, before another sensational strike in extra time to ensure the Africans qualify for the final courtesy of the golden goal rule.

“Wilson Oruma... if he was not in that team, we wouldn’t win the Olympics gold,” he said.
