  • Donnarumma was fuming after Italy were humiliated by Germany on Tuesday, June 14
  • The 2006 World Champions lost 5-2 in a game which the scoreline could have been far more embarrassing
  • In the post-match interview, Donnarumma hit out at a journalist who suggested he struggled during the game

Gianluigi Donnarumma was in no mood for scathing interview questions after Italy’s humbling at the hands of Germany on Tuesday.

The Azurri, who will not be participating in the World Cup, were beaten 5-2 by a resurgent Germany as Timo Werner got two goals for his nation.

In what was another lackluster performance by Roberto Mancini’s side, Italy were down 5-0 and it took late goals from Willy Gnonto and Alessandro Bastoni to ease the unflattering scoreline.

Donnarumma, a Paris Saint Germain player, took some questions after the game, but it was clear he was upset by the result.

“We are angry. There are no excuses, we have to get back out there and prove this is not us. There are simply no excuses,” Donnarumma told RAI Sport as quoted by Football Italia.
“We were lacking everything tonight. There was also some fatigue after four games in 15 days at the end of the season, but we don’t want to seek alibis. Now we will look each other in the eye and analyse everything.
“We’re really disappointed for the fans, for what they saw tonight. We had a few chances, but it’s not good enough. We’ll analyse everything and start again.”

Despite accepting some part in the defeat, one journalist pressed the shot spotter by suggesting that he struggled to play out from back passes in the game.

Donnarumma did not appreciate the suggestions and he hit back, saying:

“When did it happen before? When I was fouled against Real Madrid? If we want to cause controversy over these things, then fine, I am here to talk for the team. If you want to blame me, fine, I’ll take the blame, I am the captain and I keep going with head held high.
“I think you’re all trying to create something about these errors, fine.”

The keeper was also discontent with Germany’s Joshua Kimmich, who attempted an audacious chip from the halfway line with the scores 5-2. To Donnarumma, the attempt showed a lack of respect.

England hit new low against Hungary

Italy was not the only nation that endured a miserable night on Tuesday as England also hit a new low thanks to a 4-0 mauling by Hungary.

The Three Lions’ dismal campaign in the Nations League went on as they have now gone four games without a win, and defeat to Hungary only piled more pressure on Southgate.

Two strikes from Roland Sallai and one apiece from Adam Nagy and Daniel Gazdag ensured the Three Lions remain bottom of Group A3 and facing a real possibility of relegation to the Nations League second tier
