- Boos rung inside the Molineaux as fans criticized the manager for taking of Bukayo Saka for Harry Maguire
- The defeat was England’s heaviest at home in more than 90 years
Gareth Southgate was on the receiving end of harsh criticism from England fans on Tuesday, June 14, as the Three Lions suffered a crushing defeat to Hungary in the Nations League.
England supporters were particularly critical of the manager after he decided to take off Bukayo Saka to bring in Harry Maguire in defence.
The substitution was seen as Southgate’s way of saying the game was already gone, and England fans did not appreciate it at all.
Hungary went on to secure an emphatic 4-0 win at the Molineaux to hand England their heaviest home defeat since 1928.
The boos rang out through the stadium after Hungary made it 3-0 through Zsolt Nagy.
It got so bad, that England fans blatantly started chanting “You don’t know what you’re doing” once Saka was taken off.
Ironic cheers soon followed, with the home fans chanting “Ole” each time a Hungary player completed a pass.
Southgate out?
Not long after the game, fans then flooded social media with calls to have the manager sacked.

How anyone ever remotely thought that Gareth Southgate is a good football manager is absolutely beyond me. The players have been England's 'success'
