The Reds, through its Sporting Director, Julian Ward, have started discussions with Benfica for the possible purchase of the 22-year-old striker.
The Daily Mail reports Liverpool are willing to smash their transfer record to sign the Uruguayan striker, who is expected to cost the Premier League club as high as £85m.
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of Darwin Nunez and would prefer the 22-year-old as the perfect replacement for wantaway forward Sadio Mane.
Mane has suggested he wants a new challenge away from Anfield and is itching for a move to Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich this summer with just one year left on his Liverpool contract.
Juventus defender, De Ligt ready for Liverpool move
Meanwhile, Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has given Liverpool one condition for him to join the Reds this summer transfer window.
De Ligt is prepared to sign for the English Premier League giants if the Reds offer him a deal that will see the Dutch defender earn £197,000 a week, Paisley Gates reports.
The Dutch defender still has a contract with Juventus, which is set to expire in the summer of 2024 but will fancy a move to the English Premier League if a serious bid comes in.
