FootballMarcus Rashford: Unsettled Manchester United Star Courted by Tottenham in Fresh Twist
- Tottenham Hotspur had lined up a move for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United who had a season to forget at Old Trafford
- Spurs are however highly unlikely to pursue the deal given Rashford’s high valuation plus United have no strong conviction to sell the England international
- Rashford will be hoping to rediscover his form next season under new manager Erik Ten Hag who is expected to introduce a myriad number of changes at the club
Manchester United’s attacker Marcus Rashford has been linked with a stunning move to Tottenham Hotspur. Rashford has been out of favour in the just-concluded season under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
The England international scored only five goals in 32 appearances in all competitions. And with the arrival of new manager Erik Ten Hag expected to bring in a raft of changes, Rashford might be forced out of his boyhood club.
Ten Hag is expected to buy close to six players in a major transfer overhaul. The club has already confirmed the departures of Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard. Caught Offside reports that Italian super-agent Roberto De Fanti claims that despite Rashford’s poor form, top European clubs are still interested in the attacker.
The Red Devils are however not looking to sell the 24-year-old. They consider him part of the rebuild process under the former Ajax manager.
Prior to any discussions, a valuation of around £40m, maybe £50m, seemed fair, but it turns out the attacker would cost a lot more – between £70m and £80m.
United are confident a club is unlikely to pay that, especially off the back of a poor season, so they’re almost certain he will stay. They are happy for Rashford to stay too, also because they know that if they did sell him, they would need to replace him and that is not a priority, definitely not this summer anyway.
Tottenham Hotspur had inquired about his availability but his valuation is likely to put them off. Antonio Conte is overseeing a rebuild of his own as he looks to challenge for titles next season.
The Spurs hierarchy under Chief Executive Officer Daniel Levy is expected to provide funds for the acquisition of top players that suit Conte’s style and demands. The North London club has already completed the signing of Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan.
