- Other clubs are expected to show personnel surplus to requirements the door as they look to consolidate their finances after the Covid-19 economic crunch
- SAFPU is willing to step in and help these players dealing with the shock of being unexpectedly cut loose
The mass exodus of players from Premier Soccer League teams has been the subject of much debate in local football circles over the last since the club season ended.
Kaizer Chiefs, Amazulu, Sekhukhune United, and Maritzburg United released 46 players between them. This number is expected to balloon alarmingly as the other clubs are expected to do the same, trying to manage their finances in the aftermath of the economic crunch brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to SowetanLIVE, the South African Football Players' Union (SAFPU) is concerned by this turn of events. However, it is prepared to step in where it can.
SAFPU president Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe said:
"We'll continue to advocate for the rights of the players. It's sad to see so many players losing jobs but there's nothing we can do if clubs decide against renewing players' contracts. We offer psychological help and players must not be scared to approach us because it can be difficult to deal with losing your job when you weren't expecting it.''
ZamFoot reported that Augustine Mulenga's release by Amazulu came as a shock to him, saying that club president Sandile had told him that his contract would be extended. SowetanLIVE also revealed in another article that something similar happened between Maritzburg United and defender Clayton Daniels.
Gaoshubelwe added:
"We encourage players to ask early if clubs will keep them or not. They must also not be scared to sign pre-contracts elsewhere when they enter the last six months of their existing contracts. This is within their rights and it can avoid the stress of facing unemployment.''
