  • Controversy seems to be the order of the day in the lower leagues of South African football, judging by the headlines in recent times
  • This time, the threat of violence has intimidated SAFA Mpumalanga Second Division side Bayern FC against Secunda M Stars
  • The sides were involved in an unpleasant encounter earlier this year, which after abandonment, will have to be replayed

Fearing for their lives, ABC Motsepe team Bayern FC is not enthusiastic about pitching up for a replay against Secunda M Stars in the SAFA Second Division Mpumalanga stream's play-offs.

Their last encounter in April was abandoned after a pitch invasion during which SAFA match officials were set upon by furious spectators, with some having to be taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries. The country's football governing body then ordered a replay between the clubs.

As reported by Kick Off, Secunda M Stars was later found guilty of violence related to this incident, as well as the vandalisation of referee Victor Hlungwane's tyres outside the Secunda Stadium. However, the punishment is yet to be meted out.

According to the article, a Bayern official said:

"Our lives are in danger. You saw what happened during the second leg match in Mbombela where even match officials were injured. It's not safe at all. Some of our players are breadwinners and you can imagine if someone can be killed in a soccer match and what is going to happen to those families? Our safety is not guaranteed.
"Do we need now to die just because of football? Our players are still traumatised by the previous incident."

Last week, SAFA permanently banned Matiyasi FC and Nsami Mighty Birds after the former defeated the latter 59-1 in a match that had 41 own goals, as per FARpostZA. Then GladAfrica Championship side Cape Town Spurs made an appeal to sports minister Nathi Mthethwa, protesting poor refereeing in the National First Division.
