FootballMarumo Gallants Coach Dan Malesela Believes That Bafana Bafana Should Not Be a Development Squad
- Marumo Gallants coach Dan Malesela believes that the national team should not be a finishing school for players
- Malesela made the comments amid the furore of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos leaving out in-form and experienced players
- "Dance" stated that the squad should be packed with players who are currently delivering the goods at home and abroad
Legendary former player Dan "Dance" Malesela is of the opinion that Bafana Bafana should not be a place where players are developed, with only the best being selected.
This comes during an ongoing uproar in which national team coach Hugo Broos is not selecting patently in-form and experienced players, which has not sat well with some in the footballing fraternity.
According to TimesLIVE, Malesela believes Bafana should be dominated by players who are top performers and ready to play at such a level, rather than saying they will come right after a certain number of years, which is Broos' current selection criteria.
Hinting at the controversial exclusion of Andile Jali and Themba Zwane, "Dance" said:
“If you have six players at Sundowns that are good enough to go to the national, let them go and if you have nine let them go. In Spain they were doing it, take them if you are good enough. The national team is not to start saying I’m going to build. You can’t build in the national team — you don’t build there.
“You play to win in the senior national team because there’s high competition, there are positions in the world rankings that are at stake."
Kick Off reported Broos as saying:
"Don't focus on the fact that Jali and Zwane have five trophies. I look through that and again, I said it from the beginning, and I've said it now, and I'll say it in two years when I'm still here. I am very sorry, but I don't see why I should select Jali or Zwane."

FootballOrlando Pirates Ace Thembinkosi Lorch surprised by Hugo Broos Bafana Bafana recall after poor run of form
Star Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch said that his recall into the Bafana Bafana setup came as a surprise to him.
As reported by Sports Brief, the 28-year-old has been out of sorts in recent seasons (apart from a recent late resurgence in form), which saw him fall out of favour with Hugo Broos when he was appointed as coach last year.
The Belgian included him in the daunting 2023 AFCON qualifying match against Morocco in Rabat on Thursday.
