  • Orlando Pirates parting ways with Fadlu Davids has not surprised former players Edward "MaGents" Motale and Tonic Chabalala
  • Davids was in charge of Pirates together with Mandla Ncikazi after the sacking of Joseph Zinnbauer early last season
  • Chabalala was more prominent in voicing his unease with the co-coach setup, saying it would fail in the long term

Former Orlando Pirates players Tonic Chabalala and Edward “Magents” Motale were unsurprised that the club parted ways with co-coach Fadlu Davids after a disappointing season.

Pirates stated on Friday that the former Maritzburg United striker and coach had walked the Buccaneers' plank. He and co-coach Mandla Ncikazi took the helm early in the season after Josef Zinnbauer's sudden departure following an MTN 8 loss to Moroka Swallows last August

According to SowetanLIVE, "MaGents" Motale said he believed the relationship between Pirates and Davids was bound to end as he had not done much to improve the side, saying:

“His departure doesn’t come as a surprise at all for me because in all the seasons (as an assistant and co-coach) that he has been with Pirates he has not done much to help them improve, I don’t think there’s a lot of good that has come from his contribution as a member of the technical team.”

Chabalala, who was never a fan of the co-coaching situation as per iDiski Times, added:

“This is good news. That’s what I’ve been saying, that you can’t have two coaches. It’s a no, no for me. You need to have someone who is going to take a decision on what needs to happen with the team and not two people pulling in different directions.
“If Mandla stays, he will be able to take the responsibility of everything that is happening with regards to the team. If they give him a chance, he will need a lot of support because if you don’t have the support you can’t go anywhere.”

While it was not clear what Ncikazi's future now looked like, Chabalala mused:

“The person who is going to replace Fadlu has to be someone who has a plan to bring change to the team and not just be there for the sake of it. He must be able to push the team to the direction that it needs to take right now."

Former Orlando Pirates captain Tonic Chabalala believes two coach system does not work read

Former Orlando Pirates defender and captain Tonic Chabalala is not a fan of the current co-coaching system in place at the club.

As reported by Sports Brief, Fadlu Davids and Mandla Ncikazi stepped into both roles after German manager Josef Zinnbauer abruptly resigned from the post of head coach last year. Orlando Pirates is yet to appoint a new permanent coach.

Chabalala said that having two coaches would cause division among the players.
