Nigerian Journalist Assaulted by 3SC Fans After NPFL Draw Against Remo Stars

A disturbing incident has been captured on social media, showing Nigerian sports reporter, Tobi Adepoju, being assaulted by fans of the Shooting Stars of Ibadan on June 1, 2022.

The incident reportedly occurred after the Nigerian Professional Football League matchday 31 clash between 3SC and the visiting Remo Stars, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

After losing their last away game 3-1 in Owerri against Heartland, Shooting Stars fans were expecting their players to soar in Ibadan against the Ikenne team.

Remo Stars, on the other hand, had lost their last home game against Kano Pillars and the players were out for redemption.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 8th minute through Sikiru Alimi via a penalty, but Shooting Stars restored parity in the 13th minute with a goal from Lucky Emmanuel.

The match eventually ended 1-1.

3SC fans assaults sports journalist

According to information Sports Brief has gathered, the Ibadan fans alleged the Lagos-based journalist was a fan of the opposition and confronted him.

The confrontation then escalated into physicality, with police having to intervene.

Police were said to have fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd, allowing the journalist to flee the scene under armed guard.

Adepoju told Sports Brief he was recovering at home and was grateful to be alive after the incident, thanking God, the police, and his colleagues for his well-being.

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported on Nigeria having new opponents in Group A of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after the Confederation of Africa Football - CAF reinstated Sao Tome and Principe.

The tiny island nation had been disqualified by the confederation's disciplinary committee following a complaint lodged by fellow African national, Mauritius that they fielded an ineligible player in the playoffs.
