Ukraine beat Scotland 3-1 at the Hampden Park in Glasgow to proceed to the next and final round of the World Cup qualifiers.
It was an emotional night for Ukraine who are struggling with political issues and war back in their home country. The game started in an ill-tempered fashion with centre referee Daniel Makkelie issuing two yellow cards in the first ten minutes.
Ukraine were the better side from the onset. Viktor Tsygankov forced Craig Gordon into making a fingertip save after a wonderful half volley. Gordon was at it a few moments later, this time around denying Andriy Yarmolenko with a double save.
The West Ham star was however not to be denied again when Atalanta's midfielder Ruslan Malinovsky delivered a wonderful ball upfield. Yarmolenko beat the offside trap and lobbed the ball above Gordon who cam crumbling out of his area for Ukraine's first goal.
Scotland remained subdued and head coach Steven Clarke reacted immediately after halftime, bringing off Lyndon Dykes for Ryan Christie. His efforts however backfired with Roman Yaremchuk adding a second for Ukraine, four minutes after the restart.
The Benfica forward rose highest to power in a header and send Hampden Park into pin-drop silence.
Aston Villa's John McGinn had the glorious chance to half the deficit in the 66th minute but he put his header wide with an empty goal gaping in front of him. Scotland finally scored in the 78th minute through Callum McGregor.
Ukraine survived a late onslaught from Scotland. Artem Dovbyk was released through on goal by Oleksandr Zinchenko and the Dnipro-1 forward made no mistake by powering in Ukraine's third.
The Oleksandr Petkov coached side will now head to Cardiff on Sunday to make another attempt to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2006.
