According to GiveMeSports, the 21-year-old shot-stopper waited for the assistant referee to complete his mandatory pre-match checks around the goalmouth before he casually pulled and kicked the posts slightly inwards.

A video of Gunnarsson engaging in the cheeky trick has since surfaced online, with fans divided if indeed the antic handed the keeper's side an unfair advantage.

Norwegian outlet, Aftenbladet, estimates that the actions would have shortened the total width of the posts by between 15-20 centimetres.

But while addressing the claims, the Icelandic stopper denied he was attempting to disadvantage his opponents, asserting his stunts were nothing more than a little pre-match superstition.

“It’s just a pre-match ritual I have before the matches,” Gunnarsson claimed.
“Which makes me feel comfortable. It’s no more than that. I just kick the bars a little," he added.
