The Reds were gunning for a seventh European title, but the defensive solidity of Carlo Ancelotti’s side and the precision of Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior undid them.

1. Juventus (5 defeats)
The Italian side has suffered the most number of heartbreaks on Europe’s big stage. They first lost to Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and then to Real Madrid a year later.
The Old Lady then lost the final in 2003 on post-match penalties against their Italian rivals, AC Milan. Their most recent defeats have come in the hands of Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid in 2017.
2. Bayern Munich (3 defeats)
English sides have proven to be an Achilles heel for the Bavarian giants on two different occasions. They fell to Manchester United courtesy of the famous Ole Gunnar Solskjaer goal in 1999 before going down to Chelsea in 2012 at their own home stadium. The other defeat came in the hands of Inter Milan in 2010.
3. AC Milan (3 defeats)
The Rossoneri are the second-most successful side in the Champions League history but have similarly suffered crushing defeats. The most notable one was in 2005 when Liverpool came from three goals down to win.
