  • Liverpool were heavily interested in signing Heung-min Son from Tottenham Hotspurs had the club not qualified for the UEFA Champions League
  • Spurs ended up finishing fourth, meaning that Son’s chances of leaving North London will be zero to none with his current contract running to 2025
  • Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign new attackers with both Mohamed Salah and Sadio mane yet to renew their contracts with the Anfield outfit

Liverpool were preparing a major transfer swoop for Heung-min Son. Jurgen Klopp was said to be eyeing a move for Son should Tottenham not qualify for the Champions League.

But with Antonio Conte masterminding a late surge that saw Spurs finish fourth, Liverpool’s chances of getting the Korean are now dimmed.

Son could have been tempted to move away to a club that offers Champions League football. Liverpool, meanwhile, are desperate to sign another attacker with the futures of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in doubt.

The duo only have one year remaining in their contracts. Mane especially is understood to be keen on seeking a new challenge this summer according to trusted sports journalist Fabrizio Romano. Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are the leading candidates to snap up the Senegalese forward.

According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool were interested in signing Son, but those hopes could now be over. The South Korean recently extended his contract with the North London club till 2025.

Tottenham’s CEO Daniel Levy is a known tough negotiator in the transfer market and will demand a huge fee for Son. And given that Liverpool are modest spenders, hopes of seeing Son don the red jersey in Merseyside might be a pipe dream.

The 29-year-old scored 23 goals in the just-concluded season of the Premier League to win the Golden Boot jointly with Mohamed Salah. He also assisted nine times to help Spurs back to Europe’s elite competition.

Son will surely be important to Antonio Conte’s plans next season as the Italian manager seeks to claim silverware for Spurs.

Sadio Mane consoles Liverpool teammates after Champions League defeat

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Sadio Mane showed his kind side after Liverpool's Champions League heartbreak as he was spotted comforting teammates after their defeat to Real Madrid.

The Reds were humbled 1-0 during the final of the European competition staged in Paris on Saturday night, May 28.

Despite their dominance in the early exchanges of the encounter, Liverpool were unable to see off a spirited Real Madrid.
