The battle to be part of the DStv Premiership intensified today when Cape Town All Stars and the University of Pretoria met at the Athlone Stadium.

AmaTuks started out much the stronger side with Keegan Allan, Thabang Sibanyoni and Wonderboy Makhubu all having success with the ball.

The Pretoria side took the lead in the 22nd minute when Sanele Barns put a beautiful cross into the box. Makhubu looked like he was going to hit it the first time but jumped over the ball, allowing it to run into the box for an advancing Samuel Julies. Julies smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Sibanyoni then made it two just 20 minutes later. Makhubu again was at the heart of the play as he controlled a long ball, spun quickly, and fed Sibanyoni who smashed it past Kyle Peters in goal.

Allan almost made it three just minutes later but sent his header over the bar and Amatuks went into the break with a two-goal advantage.

Cape Town All Stars started the second half strong but almost went three goals down when Makhubuu’s effort hit the cross bar. The Mother City side did get a goal back when Sirgio Kammies headed home.

Kammies got his head onto a Michael Morton cross. They pushed forward constantly through the second half and looked likely to equalise. Sadly that dream was dashed when Makhubu headed home in the 83rd minute to wrap up the victory for AmaTuks.

The other team in the playoffs, Swallows FC, will take on Cape Town All Stars on Wednesday, looking to take a step closer to retaining their DStv Premiership status.

GladAfrica Championship side Pretoria Callies up for sale, Pietermartizburg businessman Lebo Mokoena makes bid

The culture of buying a football club and its status continues as another GladAfrica Championship side is up for sale.

The Daily Sun reported that Pietermaritzburg businessman, Lebo Mokoena had purchased the club. According to the publication, it was unclear as yet whether he had purchased the club itself or just the status in the GladAfrica Championship.

Jomo Cosmos relegated to ABC Motsepe League, Ezenkosi to play in the amateur leagues after 39 years at the top

It’s the end of an era in South African football as Jomo Cosmos were officially relegated from the professional football leagues.

Ezenkosi have been competing in the professional leagues for 39 years and are one the staples of the South African soccer scene.

The club was relegated to the GladAfrica Championship from the DStv Premiership at the end of the 2015/16 season and has been there ever since. Fans hoped they would return to the DStv Premiership, but the club dwindled.
