Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed the pain he had to endure to help AC Milan win the Serie A title.

The Swede, in a harrowing Instagram post, shared vivid details of his injury-stricken spell as he disclosed he played through the pain barrier for large parts of the campaign.

The 40-year old went on to declare he made something impossible to be possible’ by playing despite suffering injury.

"For the last six months I played without an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] in my left knee. Took more than 20 injections in six months. Emptied the knee once a week for six months. Painkillers every day for six months. He said on Instagram.
I have never suffered so much on and off the pitch. Barely slept for six months because of the pain,"

Ibrahimovic, who had a brief spell with Manchester United, returned to AC Milan in 2020 for a second stint.

He was also a Serie A winner the first time he played for the Rossoneri, more than a decade ago.

In the just-concluded season, Zlatan managed eight goals, despite being in and out of hospital with injuries.

He also revealed that he was only able to train 10 times in the last six months.

Ibrahimovic set for eight months out with injury

Despite a heroic ending to his season with AC Milan, it is highly unlikely the world will get to see the best of Zlatan again.

On Wednesday, Sports Brief reported that the Swede underwent surgery earlier this week in France to repair instability brought by a previous anterior cruciate ligament injury.

He is set to be out for up to eight months, and his contract at AC Milan expires this summer.

If his deal is renewed, he will not be available for the Rossoneri until the middle of the 2022/23 season.

In a statement, AC Milan revealed Ibrahimovic’s surgery had been a success, and he would now embark on the road to recovery.
