Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany looks set for a return to English football after leaving in 2019.
The defender is currently the manager of Anderlecht in his home country of Belgium but has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Burnley.
The Guardian reported that Burnley were close to appointing Kompany as their new manager, hoping that he would help lead them out of the EFL Championship.
Burnley parted ways with Sean Dyche earlier this season and were relegated from the English Premier League on Sunday.
Kompany led Anderlecht to third place in the in the Belgian A League, earning them a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa Conference League.
Burnley Express reported that the Belgium international was in advanced talks with Burnley Chairman, Alan Pace, over the position. Kompany was previously believed to be keen on the post if The Clarets retained their Premier League status.
Burnley are expected to announce the signing of the new manager at the beginning of June, as the new season kicks off at the end of July.
Kompany will have a tough ask at Burnley should he take the job, as the club are expected to lose a few players following their relegation.
Nine players are out of contract at Turf Moor, including Ashley Barnes and Jack Cork, and may be tempted to move on rather than extend their stays at the Championship side.
