FootballClub Owner in Bulgaria Causes His Side to Suffer Relegation After Invading Pitch to Select Penalty Taker
- Tsarsko Selo suffered relegation in chaotic circumstances after the club president invaded the field to disrupt a penalty kick awarded to his team in the dying embers of the game
- Tsarsko had the opportunity to keep their survival hopes alive with a late penalty however, the resulting kick was saved
- The original taker Yusupha Yaffa was forced to hand over the penalty duties to the club captain Kavdanski, whose tame effort got saved and eventually landed the team second-tier football
Bulgarian outfit Tsarsko Selo were relegated from the Bulgarian First League after missing a last-gasp penalty, moments after the club president had invaded the pitch to prevent one of his players from taking the spot-kick.
The club owner's unwanted intervention proved costly as his preferred penalty taker missed from 12 yards to inflict relegation on Tsarsko Selo.
A win would have given Tsarsko a fighting chance of maintaining their status in the Bulgarian elite division due to their superior goal difference over fellow strugglers Botev Vratsa.
However, Tsarsko missed two penalties in their 1-1 draw with Lokomotiv Sofia, the second awarded in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
What ensued in the dying embers of the game?
Skipper Martin Kavdanski and AC Milan academy graduate Yusupha Yaffa were involved in a squabble over who would take the kick before Yaffa won the battle of wills after support from some of his teammates.
But club president Ivo Andreevski had other ideas as he stormed the pitch as Yaffa was set to attempt to score from 12 yards.
Andreevski managed to impose his preferred penalty taker on the team, forcing Yaffa to leave the spot-kick duties for club captain Kavdanski, who eventually saw his effort saved.
His failed attempt from the spot condemned Tsarsko to the second tier in dramatic circumstances.
