Victor Gomes’ high-profile stature in international refereeing continues to rise.
Gomes will be heading off to Qatar to officiate at the FIFA World Cup and most recently handled the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Egypt.
Gomes has now been handed another high profile game as he was chosen to officiate the CAF Champions League final, KickOff reported.
Egypt’s Al Ahly and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca will meet in the final on 30 May at the Stade Mohammed V in Morocco. Fellow South African Zakhele Siwela will serve as the first assistant and Souro Phatsoane from Lesotho will serve as the second assistant.
Angola’s Helder Carvalho will be the fourth official for the game, while Bamlak Tessema from Ethiopia will be the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The news may please Pitso Mosimane and his Al Ahly team. Al Ahly were upset that the final would be held in Morocco despite the fact that a Moroccan team are in the final. Al Ahly made a few demands before they agreed to play the final, Goal.com reported.
One of their conditions was that a top African referee, one without any controversial decisions before, was appointed to officiate the game.
They also asked that a European referee be appointed to handle VAR.
