- Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance of the local game continues to be a hot topic in the country.
The Brazilians have won the last five DStv Premiership titles in a row and many have complained that the Premiership is now a farmers league.
Past and present footballers have commented on the need for more competition in South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi agrees.
Mngqithi praised the work done by Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates and thinks that they are heading in the right direction in terms of recruitment, Soccer Laduma reported.
“This benefits South African football as the league is not enjoyable with only one club ‘shining’,” said Mngqithi.
Mngqithi added that football was not the same the Soweto giants not being as strong as they used to be.
He added that the recruitments made by the two sides proved that they were edging closer to being competition for the Brazilians.
While Mngqithi has focused on the competition, his co-coach Rulani Mokwena isn’t paying attention to what other sides are doing.
As reported by Sowetan LIVE, Mokwena said it was none of his business what the other sides were doing.
“For us as Sundowns to look back, whereas we should be focusing on the way ahead and focusing on targets and our growth, will be very difficult because we do not spend a lot of time worrying about what everybody else is doing.”
“To be honest, it is none of our business (what other people are doing). At the end of the day, I am glad personally that I do not have that responsibility because it is a mammoth task to catch up with Sundowns.”
Mokwena, Mngqithi and Khompela rumoured to be under pressure at Mamelodi Sundowns because of CAF CL failure
FootballMokwena also touched on the other leagues where one team dominates, saying that it wasn’t the responsibility of the dominant team to slow down and allow the others to catch up.
Doctor Khumalo believes Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance ending is a good thing for South African football
Mamelodi Sundowns wrapped up their fifth DStv Premiership title in a row this season as they continue to assert their dominance over the South African football scene, Sports Brief earlier reported.
Masandawana’s dominance has had many sharing their thoughts on whether Sundowns could be stopped and now Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has shared his thoughts on the matter. As reported by Soccer Laduma, Khumalo alluded that the end of Sundowns’ title-winning streak would be good for football.
Khumalo has been quite vocal of late when it came to the state of South African football. He recently asked why legends like Lucas Radebe, who did so much for the country, were not respected by SAFA, Sowetan LIVE reported.
