Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Memphis Depay. The Barcelona striker has become the latest name to be added to Arsenal’s wish list as Mikel Arteta continues his search for a striker.
Arsenal are staring at the prospect of losing all its strikers at the end of the season. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left in January while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are yet to agree to new contracts with the club.
Depay joined Barcelona last year. He was acquired from Lyon on a free transfer. His contract runs until next year but Barca might be tempted to offload him this summer.
His form has not been in question despite being in and out of the team through injury. He has played 37 times across all competitions for Barcelona. The Netherlands international is Barcelona’s top scorer in the La Liga with 12 goals.
Xavi Hernandez is however, looking to add more attackers to his squad. Rumours have been rife about Robert Lewandowski making his way to Camp Nou. Lewandowski has rejected Bayern Munich’s plea to extend his contract.
Barcelona are faced with the prospect of having at least 11 forwards and club President Joan Laporta might be interested in selling a few to make funds for new arrivals.
Depay is only 28 years old and Arteta will be confident that he can turn around his Premier League fortunes. Depay’s stint with Manchester United didn’t turn out too well. He can play as a striker or on the flanks.
