FootballGhana’s First Ever Goal Scorer at the World Cup Asamoah Gyan Opens Up on His Feat Against Czech Republic
- Asamoah Gyan's name will forever be cast in stone in the history of Ghana football following his goalscoring feats
- Key among them was Ghana's first-ever goal at the World Cup in 2006 when Gyan broke the game's deadlock against the Czech Republic in a group game
- His goal against the Europeans will be the first of six goals scored at the Mundial, making him the most prolific African at the FIFA World Cup
Ghana's leading all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan has shed light on one of his historic goalscoring heroics for the Black Stars.
The prolific goal poacher had the singular honour of scoring Ghana's maiden goal at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 when the Black Stars faced the Czech Republic.
Gyan's first-minute strike stunned the Europeans and served as a catalyst for the West African nation to grab their first win of the Mundial.
Drawn in Group E, Ghana stumbled to a humbling 2-0 defeat to eventual winners Italy and had the difficult task of surpassing one of the best teams on the planet at the time.
Despite the herculean nature of the task ahead, Asamoah Gyan disclosed he had the hunch he will score and true to his words, he drew first blood by scoring the tournament's fastest goal in less than 120 seconds.
“I was very confident. I knew something was going to happen. Back home in Ghana, everyone was praying for us,” Gyan said in an interview with Asaase FM as quoted by Citi Sports.
“I said to myself that I needed to make history. If I scored, I would make history.”
Ghana will proceed to beat the Czech Republic 2-0 and subsequently defeat the USA in the third group game to qualify from the group stages at the first time of asking only for the fairytale journey to be short-circuited by Brazil in the knockout phase.
