- Kenyan international Michael Olunga wins the Mansour Muftah award in Qatar which is awarded to the player who scored the highest number of goals in a season
- Olunga who plays for Al Duhail finished top of the scoring charts after finding the back of the net 24 times, nine times more than his closest challenger
- He also finished second in the Most Valuable Player of the year after Al Sadd’s playmaker Akram Afif beat him to the top spot
Michael Olunga has been officially awarded the Golden Boot of the Qatar League. Olunga finished the season with 24 goals to scoop the award.
Olunga however missed out on the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the year award which was given to Al Sadd’s Akram Afif. Afif scored 14 goals and provided 17 assists to help Al Sadd beat Olunga’s Al Duhail to the league title.
This is Olunga’s second Golden Boot award abroad after winning a similar title during his time at Japanese outfit Kashiwa Reysol.
He powered through the Qatari Stars League finishing massive 9 goals ahead of his closest challenger Andre Ayew. Olunga has in the past won the top scorer award for the AFC Champions League for his heroics last season.
The Harambee Stars captain scored four goals in this season’s Champions League to help his team qualify for the Round of 16. They have set up a date against Al Rayyan which has Colombia star James Rodriguez within their ranks.
Olunga was also part of Al Duhail’s team that won the Emir Cup after beating Al-Gharafa 5-1 in the final. He scored one goal.
The Peninsula Qatar reports that Olunga was nominated for the MVP award alongside the eventual winner Afif. Others who were in the running include Jacinto Dala of Al Wakrah.

FootballIn the coaches category, Al Duhail’s Luis Castro was nominated alongside Marques Lopes of Al Wakrah and Younes Ali of Al Arabi. Lopes beat the other three to win the award.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama addressed the viral video of him running in his innerwear after a game.
A video has been doing rounds on Tiktok showing Wanyama in his undies after CF Montreal’s 2-0 win over Charlotte on Sunday, May 15.
The midfielder looked like he was jogging back to the dressing room, but the fact that he had no shorts left his teammates in stitches.
