Liverpool showed character and grit to fight off a stubborn Southampton team to keep their Premier League title ambitions alive.

The Reds fought back from a goal down to earn an important victory that leaves them just one point behind league leaders, Manchester City heading into the final matchday of the season.

Nathan Redmond had shocked the Reds after he gave Southampton an early lead against a much-changed Liverpool side without Mohammed Salah or Sadio Mane in the starting line-up.

Klopp had made several changes to the side that won the FA Cup on Sunday against Chelsea and it appeared the gamble seemed to have backfired for the German manager.

Takumi Minamino however restored parity for Liverpool after equalizing through a beautifully worked out assist from Diogo Jota.

Liverpool dominated the game in search of a winner and Joel Matip popped up to send a looping header into the back of the net in the 69th minute to give the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Jurgen Klopp’s men held on to take maximum points as the Merseyside club move within a point of Manchester City going into the final day of the season.

Liverpool will hope Manchester City slip up against Aston Villa on the final day while they earn another win against Wolves to beat Pep Guardiola’s team to the Premier League title.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Liverpool kept alive their hopes for an unlikely quadruple as they beat Chelsea via a penalty shootout to win the FA Cup.

It was almost identical scenes to the Carabao Cup on Saturday, May 14, as Liverpool edged their age-old rivals in a thrilling shootout after a goalless 120 minutes.

Mason Mount missed the decisive penalty as the shootout was forced into sudden death after both sides were level after the initial five penalties.
