Tottenham Hotspur thrashed a 10-man Arsenal 3-0 on Thursday night to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Harry Kane scored twice as Heung-min Son continued his hot streak of form to cut move to one point behind fourth place.
Arsenal started on the front foot with Hugo Lloris having a few nervy moments. But Spurs quickly settled in, with Son becoming a constant menace to the left-hand side of Arsenal's defence marshalled by Cedric Soares and Rob Holding.
Holding got a yellow card after two warnings from centre referee Paul Tierney. Cedric Soares then committed to an aerial ball tussle, fouling Son in the process in Arsenal's penalty area.
Kane stepped up to take the resultant spot-kick and sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way. It went from bad to worse for the Gunners after Holding shoved Son to the ground with his forearm, prompting Tierney to give him his marching orders.
With a goal up and a man up, Spurs increased the pressure on their North London Rivals. Son swung in a corner which was flicked to Ramsdale's far post by Rodrigo Bentacur. Kane was at hand to tap the ball into a glaring net.
That was Kane's 13th goal in this tie, the most by any player in Premier League history.
Son closes in on the Golden Boot race
Son sealed Arsenal's fate immediately after the break after pouncing on a rebound. His strike took him to 21 goals, one less than the top scorer Mohamed Salah, with two games left to play.
Marcus Rashford emerges as a surprise target for Manchester United’s arch rivals Arsenal
FootballThe rest of the half was a drab affair with Arsenal barely threatening Spurs' backline. Kane unleashed a strike from way out to test the agility of Ramsdale, who swung at full stretch to keep the scoreline respectable.
Mikel Arteta had the option of bringing Ben White for the departed Holding but chose to change his side's formation instead. Granit Xhaka was moved to left centre back, with Takehiro Tomiyasu taking up Holding's position.
The gap between the North London rivals is now down to just one point. Spurs have fixtures against Burnley and Norwich, while Arsenal have to play Newcastle before welcoming Everton on the final matchday of the season.
The Gunners still have the driving seat, but the pressure will be on them, knowing that a slip-up will shift the advantage back to Spurs.
