Despite having a significant advantage over Real Madrid, City were bundled out of the European competition in the semis after they lost 3-1 during the second leg played at Santiago Bernabeu.

The EPL side's elimination from the tournament left them with no choice but to shift their focus on winning the Premier League title.

Man City go three points clear on top of the standings

Pep Guardiola's men managed to put their Champions League heartbreak behind them when they hosted Newcastle to cement their place on top of the standings.

Goals from Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte, Phil Foden, and Rodri were enough to earn the reigning English champions a deserved victory at home.

After a dominant start to the match, the home side took the lead through Sterling in the 19th minute before Laporte doubled in the 38th minute.

However, that goal came minutes after Newcastle had what should have been an equaliser disallowed.

The second half of the match saw City continue from where they left as Rodri and Phil Foden also go their names on the scoresheet to condemn Eddie Howe's men to a comprehensive loss.

The result now has City topping the standings with 86 points, three ahead of second-placed Liverpool who dropped points against Tottenham.

Pep reveals what would make him quit Man City

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Pep Guardiola has insisted he would leave the Etihad Stadium outfit if he discovered his bosses lied to him over their Financial Fair Play investigation.

In a chat with the press ahead of Sunday’s game against Newcastle United, the Spaniard disclosed that he asked the club’s hierarchy about their financial situation.

Manchester City were recently investigated and Guardiola threw his weight behind the Etihad Stadium outfit.
