FootballChippa United and Cape Town City Goalless Draw Makes Unwanted and Unflattering Premier Soccer League History
- Unwanted history was made in the DStv Premiership match between Chippa United and Chippa United last night
- The 0-0 result was the 40th goalless draw of the season, a new "record" in the Premier Soccer League era starting in 1996
- This was further accentuated by the fact that not one team in the league averages two or more goals a match
The DStv Premiership has proven itself as a league of goal shyness judging by an unflattering record that was "broken".
The 0-0 result between Chippa United and Cape Town City last night was a record 40th goalless draw of the season. This was one more than the previous high of 39 in the 2001/02 Castle Premiership as it was known then.
According to The South African, there are still 25 league matches to go this season, suggesting that the number of draws could increase before it ends. Ironically, the goalscoring records in the league and across all competitions by one player (25 and 35 respectively held by Collins Mbesuma) are under threat from Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile, who has 22 league goals and 28 in total.
The log table makes for ugly reading when it comes to goals scored by all the teams. Champions Sundowns have scored the most goals with 52 from 27, a poor 1.92 goals per game return.
The next best is 37 by Royal AM in the same amount of matches. Only four other teams have also scored 30 or more goals, namely SuperSport United and Golden Arrows (31 each) Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs (30 goals each).
For good measure, Shalulile has scored more league goals than seven teams: TS Galaxy (21), Marumo Gallants and Chippa United (20 each), Sekhukhune United (19), Maritzburg United and Swallows (18 each) and Baroka FC (17).
There have been 216 matches played this season in which 423 goals were scored, an average of 1.96 goals per match.

FootballAs reported on Sports Brief, Shalulile's 92nd-minute goal last night for the DStv Premiership champions was his 50th goal for the club since joining it from Highlands Park in 2020, doing so in an unusually quick 80 appearances.
this put him in the '50 Club' alongside Daniel Mudau, Raphael Chukwu, Katlego Mphela and Themba Zwane for the club that was established in the 1960s.
