  • Jomo Cosmos were officially relegated from the GladAfrica Championship this weekend after a draw with TS Sporting
  • Jomos Sono has a slim chance of surviving the drop as the Premier Soccer League expects a few legal cases to be registered
  • The GladAfrica Championship has had many issues over the years with controversies and broken rules

There could be light at the end of the tunnel for Jomo Cosmos, despite being officially relegated from the GladAfrica Championship over the weekend.

Cosmos’ fate was sealed when they drew with TS Sporting, and Pretoria Callies beat Polokwane City.

The results meant that after 39 years in South Africa’s professional leagues, Jomo Sono’s side dropped down to the amateur leagues.

While it was a dark day for Cosmos and the South African footballing scene, there still may be hope for Ezenkosi, Sowetan LIVE reported. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is expecting a late influx of legal cases, which could affect the final log standings if clubs are docked points.

It is understood that a few teams have breached the rules this season or played unregistered players during the season. PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed that no cases had been registered yet but noted that it was still early.

The GladAfrica Championships is renowned for drama and court cases. Last season Royal AM and Sekhukhune United were involved in a lengthy dispute. Shauwn Mkhize’s side even took the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland but had no luck overturning a decision to name Sekhukhune United as champions.

As reported by CityPress, Mbombela United were relegated from the GladAfrica Championship after they were deducted a massive 34 points. In addition, the club were found guilty of playing striker Sabelo Ndzinisa.

Ndzinisa was found to have signed for both Mbombela and TS Sporting. As a result, Mbombela were docked the points during the final week of the season, despite the case occurring in August the previous year. TS Sporting were spared any punishment and survived the drop.

Over the years, there have been numerous other cases of sides being punished for breaking the rules. The one criticism, though, has been that these cases were only resolved by the PSL many months after the original case was reported.

Jomo Cosmos relegated to ABC Motsepe League, Ezenkosi to play in the amateur leagues after 39 years at the top

It’s the end of an era in South African football as Jomo Cosmos were officially relegated from the professional football leagues. Ezenkosi have been competing in the professional leagues for 39 years and are one the staples of the South African soccer scene.

The club was relegated to the GladAfrica Championship from the DStv Premiership at the end of the 2015/16 season and has been there ever since. Fans hoped they would return to the DStv Premiership, but the club dwindled.

This weekend, Cosmos’ fate was sealed when they could only manage a draw with fellow relegation-threatened side, TS Sporting, Times LIVE reported. However, a win would not have helped the side either as Pretoria Callies, the only side Cosmos could have leapfrogged, won their game against Polokwane City.
