Nigeria's U-17 Women’s team popularly known as Flamingos are edging closer to this year’s U-17 women’s World Cup after eliminating Egypt in the qualifying series.

The Flamingos on Saturday, April 30, progressed into the final round of the 2022 U-17 women’s World Cup qualifiers after beating Egypt 6-0 on aggregate, Complete Sports reports.

After winning the first leg 4-0 in Abuja, the girls continued from where they stopped as they scored two goals in the return leg to convincingly beat Egypt 2-0 at the Petrosport stadium in Cairo, hence picking up a 6-0 win on aggregate.

Flamingos score 2 first-half goals in Cairo

First-half goals from Opeyemi Ajakaye and Amina Bello sealed the win for the Flamingos.

Ajakaye opened the scoring in the fourth minute before Bello made it 2-0 in the 14th minute.

Three teams will represent Africa at this year’s U-17 women’s World Cup which will hold in India from October 11th to 30th.

Nigerian footballer Elizabeth Johnson dies after a brief illness

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Nigerian football fraternities have been thrown into mourning following the shocking demise of Sunshine Queens' goalkeeper Elizabeth Johnson who died after a brief illness.

Elizabeth Johnson was said to have trained with her teammates and showed no sign of sickness, but a headache came in the evening before she passed on hours later.

She was one of the best female goalkeepers in Nigeria and had the dreams of playing in Europe when she was alive.

Sunshine Queens' head of Media and Publicity, Femi Atolagbe made the announcement of Elizabeth Johnson's death.
