Sekhukhune United’s coach, McDonald Makhubedu, confirmed that the club would hold a guard of honour for Masandawana at Ellis Park, KickOff confirmed.

What is a guard of honour?

According to Goal.com, a guard of honour is a display of respect shown by one team towards the winners of a league or cup. Players from the opposing team form a corridor in which the champions pass through, applauding them as they go past. A guard of honour is not compulsory but is a way to acknowledge the champions.

Who could give Sundowns a guard of honour?

Sundowns still have four games remaining in the DStv Premiership and will compete against Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC and Royal AM. With Sekhukhune United announcing their intention to honour the tradition, all eyes turn to Kaizer Chiefs. During his time in charge, Stuart Baxter said that the Amakhosi would give Sundowns a guard of honour on 8 May.

With Baxter now gone, it remains to be seen whether Chiefs go ahead with the plan. Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena expects the Amakhosi to honour the tradition, Soccer Laduma reported.

“Because of what I know about the club and values people at the club carry and the professionalism and sportsmanship perspective, I expect they would do that,” he said.
“It is not a must and therefore if they do it or don’t do it, it shouldn’t really matter. What should be important is that we guard against trying to create animosity and rivalry that doesn’t exist off the pitch,” Mokwena added.

Mamelodi Sundowns dominate Premier Soccer League, Masandawana look to break more records before end of season

Mamelodi Sundowns fans are still raving about their team winning their fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title. While other clubs find excuses for Masandawana’s dominance, the numbers and stats from their season thus far don’t lie.

Sundowns won their fifth league title in a row and secured their 12th league title since the PSL era began in 1996. The next most successful clubs are the Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, with four league titles each.

So far, Masandawana has scored 50 goals, 13 more than Royal AM, Sport24 reported. 13 is also the number of points that separate the sides at the moment. 13 also happens to be the biggest margin that the Premier Soccer League has ever been won by, a feat that Sundowns could easily surpass.
