FootballKwesi Appiah Claims Ghana Could Have Been World Champions in 2010 Instead of Spain if He Was Head Coach
- James Kwesi Appiah claims he would have led Ghana to World Cup glory if he was the head coach of the Black Stars at the 2010 FIFA World Cup
- Appiah was the assistant coach to Milovan Rajevac in 2010 and believes if he was the head coach at the time the results would have been different
- He has had two stints with the national team with his only World Cup appearance in 2014 ending at the group stages
Erstwhile Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has made a bold claim about winning the FIFA World Cup if he was in charge of the team in 2010.
Ghana missed out on a semifinal berth at the 2010 World Cup when Luis Suarez's deliberate handball denied a goal-bound effort from Dominic Adiyiah in extra time.
The resulting spot-kick was missed by Asamoah Gyan with Ghana ultimately succumbing to a painful defeat in the penalty shootout to Uruguay at the quarterfinal stage.
But 12 years after the incident, soft-spoken gaffer Kwesi Appiah, who was the then-assistant coach of the Black Stars claims if he was in charge of the team at the time Ghana would have progressed to the semis and eventually won the trophy.
“If I was to be the coach of 2010, maybe I can boldly say I am going to win the World Cup because we had quality at the time. The players had played together for about five or six years so the consistency was there but is not like that now” Appiah said as quoted by Football Ghana.
He explained his assertion by revealing the quality of players Ghana paraded would have helped him realize the feat.
“In coaching, the quality of players you have at a particular time determines how you can achieve as a coach. You can have the best players around but if you are not able to assemble them well you may not get the results you need”

Kwesi Appiah warns aspiring Black Stars coaches of the pressure involved in the job
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former head coach of Ghana, James Kwesi Appiah has advised aspirants for the Black Stars coaching role to be wary of the pressure associated with the national team.
The 61-year-old tactician who had two different spells with the Black Stars believes the pressure associated with the job can cause the death of the one at the helm of affairs.
He made this revelation in an interview where he narrated that during his stint with the Black Stars, he had divided attention due to the demanding nature of the job.
