- A technical staff member from the Egyptian club Masry allegedly punched Tunisian referee Sadeq al Salmi after the match
- The Moroccans won the match 1-0, advancing to the semifinals on the away goals rule in a tie that ended 2-2
Ugly scenes marked the end of the CAF Confederations Cup quarterfinal second leg match between Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane and their Egyptian opponents Al Masry.
The Tunisian referee of the encounter Sadeq al Salmi was allegedly assaulted by an Al Mastry technical staff member following what was a fiery match. The home team won the match 1-0 after converting a contentious penalty, advancing to the semifinals on away goals in a tie that ended 2-2.
According to EWN, the visitors' technical staff were seen on the sidelines continuously complaining about Al Salmi's decisions throughout the match at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane. The match was reported to be ill-tempered, with Berkane players supposedly faking injuries to either break their opponents' rhythm or also to waste time.
SportDaily24 reported that, when the match ended, Al Salmi brandished red cards to Al Masry's Farid Shawky and Mohamed Adel Latif, which set things off. The unnamed technical staff member punched the referee while also kicking him before security came in to intervene.
There has been no indication if action will be taken against the alleged assaulter and the club.
Berkane will take on Democratic Republic of the Congo giants TP Mazembe in one semifinal, with Libyan club Al Ahli Tripoli and South Africa's Orlando Pirates meeting in the other.
The matches will take place on 8 and 15 May.
