It’s not only Mamelodi Sundowns making history; their players are as well.
Masandawana goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, has officially become the most successful player in the history of South African football.
Previously Onyango and former Mamelodi Sundowns player Hlompho Kekana were tied on eight titles each, Goal.com reported.
The Ugandan shot-stopper has surpassed that mark as he notched up his ninth league title this evening. He reached the feat as Sundowns were crowned the 2021/22 DStv Premiership champions.
Sundowns were declared champions thanks to a goalless draw against Cape Town City, IOL reported. Masandwana have now won their fifth title in a row and a record-extending 12th Premier Soccer League title.
Onyango has also won 15 titles in South Africa’s top flight. This includes league titles and cup competitions. The Ugandan won three league titles while at SuperSport United, with the other six league titles coming with Mamelodi Sundowns.
After Masandawana’s defeat to Petro de Luanda in Angola in the CAF Champions League, many fans called for the 36-year-old to hang up his gloves. However, his record-setting achievement with the Brazilians will be a reminder to fans that Onyango is still at the top of his game.
Mamelodi Sundowns Wrap Up Fifth Consecutive League Title, Secure Much Needed Point Against Cape Town City
Mamelodi Sundowns are officially the 2021/22 DStv Premiership Champions. Masandawna achieved the feat by playing out to a goalless draw at home with Cape Town City, Sports Brief earlier reported.
Cape Town City travelled to Loftus Versveld looking to play spoiler and put Mamelodi Sundowns’ title celebrations on hold.
Sundowns went into the encounter, only needing a draw to secure the title. Neither team seemed to want the win, though, as the first half was largely uneventful. Both sides had enough possession of the ball but did very little.
