South Africa could soon be facing a dark day in local football as Jomo Cosmos faces relegation from the GladAfrica Championship.

This season, Cosmos have only won three matches and remain at the bottom of the table with three games to go.

Jomo Sono’s side are eight points away from safety but can only earn nine points from their remaining games.

Former Cosmos player Calvin Motloung believes it will be a sad day for South African football if the team were to be relegated to the ABC Motsepe League, KickOff reported.

The ABC Motsepe League is the third tier of South African football, and teams relegated to the league rarely make it back into topflight football. The Premier Soccer League and GladAfrica Championship are affiliate members of the South African Football Association (SAFA) but are organised by the PSL. SAFA itself runs the ABC Motsepe League.

"I feel sorry for Bra Jomo, for all the hard work has done for this club. It's a lesson to other clubs that if you don't win games you get relegated irrespective of your status in South African football,” Motloung said.

When was Jomo Cosmos founded?

Jomo Cosmos was founded by Jomo Sono in 1983 and became a pillar of the local footballing scene. They competed in the National Soccer League, becoming the Premier Soccer League. Cosmos produced many great players over the years, many of which represented South Africa. The club was relegated to the GladAfrica Championship at the end of the 2015/16 season and has been there ever since.

Sono remains the club owner and serves as the coach, scout, and administrator. He has come under criticism for not delegating duties to others over the years. Speaking before their latest loss over the weekend, Sono said he wasn’t even thinking about the team being relegated, Sunday World reported.

“This club has a rich history and we will do everything to protect the brand. There are plans to survive relegation, I will not mention them because I will be giving away my strategy to our opponents. We just need a bit of luck because the boys are playing good football,” he said.
“The first division is very competitive, the standards are higher than the PSL. It’s not easy in this league but we are not considering relegation, Sono added.”

To survive the drop, the Cosmos need to win their remaining fixtures and hope that Pretoria Callies lose their last three games.

Jomo Cosmos Struggling in GladAfrica Championship, Fans Want Jomo Sono to Step Down

Earlier in the season, Sports Brief reported that Jomo Cosmos have been without a win in the GladAfrica Championship, and the club's chances of returning to the top flight are becoming slimmer.

Jomo Cosmos are now at the bottom of the GladAfrica Championship standings and will be facing a relegation battle soon if they do not pick up any points. The club used to be a force to be reckoned with in the PSL but is no longer feared due to a terrible decline.

After Jomo Cosmos lost once again in the GladAfrica Championship, this time to JDR Stars at the Tsakane Stadium, fans were frustrated, and many think that Jomo Sono should step down as the coach.
