  • The governance of football in England is set to come under tighter scrutiny after the British government established an independent regulator
  • The independent regulator will have sweeping powers when it comes to matters that are currently affecting the game
  • One of them is club ownership, which has become a very sore point, particularly when it comes to English teams

The British government has revealed plans to reform football's governance across England.

This came in the form of installing an independent regulator, which will look to ensure financial sustainability across the game in the land. Ten key recommendations came out of a supporter-powered review that was triggered by the disgraceful failed European Super League project last year.

According to ENCA, the most noticeable move was to ensure that the regulator has the power to take action against clubs without interference from powerful bodies like the Premier League, the English Football League and the Football Association. Another recommendation was to ensure that new owners and directors underwent a test to ensure that they were qualified to run clubs, particularly with greater fan involvement in their appraisal.

This was to combat a 'widespread culture' of clubs running unsustainable financial models where the pursuit of profit over proper financial management has seen great and historic institutions of the game run into the ground.

To show how serious the government is, it warned the Premier League to start redistrubting its bottomless reserves of money more equally or risk punitive financial levies and other harsh terms that could be imposed on it.

Minister for sports Nigel Huddleston said:

"The message to the Premier League is quite clear: its need to act sooner rather than later because, otherwise, (a settlement) will be forced on them through the regulator."
