It was an afternoon to forget for Mohammed Salisu who scored an own goal as Southampton were held to a stalemate against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon

The 22-year-old put the ball in his own net as he attempted to clear the ball. The goal handed the home side a 2-0 lead before Southampton surged a comeback to draw 2-2.

Brighton took the lead after just two minutes into the game through English-born Ghanaian Danny Welbeck.

But Salisu scored an own goal in the 44th minute to double Brighton’s lead.

Southampton pulled one back courtesy of a wonderful striker by James Ward-Prowse, who was making his 300th Premier League game.

Ward-Prowse bagged his brace of the afternoon to help Southampton pick a vital point away.

Salisu despite scoring an own goal lasted the entire duration for his outfit.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has ascribed Mohammed Salisu's recent poor form to the transfer reports linking the center-half to other clubs.

Salisu, who was described as 'phenomenal' by ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, has experienced a dip in form in recent times.

The 23-year-old guardsman has been surprisingly involved in individual errors leading to goals after his sublime display against Manchester City.

Otto Addo Opens Up on Mohammed Salisu’s Reluctance to Play for Ghana

Sports Brief earlier reported that caretaker manager of the Black Stars Otto Addo has shed light on Mohammed Salisu's unavailability for the senior men's national team.

Following Black Stars' recent qualification to the 2022 World Cup, football fans in the West African nation have been divided on whether the country should continue in pursuit of the Southampton guardsman.

Salisu has been a top target for the Ghana Football Association, who have made several attempts to lure the former Real Valladolid defender to play for the Black Stars.
