Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has confessed that his unfortunate slip against Chelsea was the reason he left the club.
Liverpool were on the cusp of winning the Premier League title in the 2013/2014 season but Gerrard’s tumble allowed Manchester City to beat them to it.
The midfielder slipped on Anfield’s turf to pave way for Demba Ba to open the scoring for the Blues. Willian added a second one in the dying minutes of the game. Crystal Palace then frustrated the then Brendan Rodgers side the following game week to a 3-3 draw.
Gerrard’s career as a player was trophy-laden but he ended it without ever winning the Premier League. He would later on make amends as manager by leading Rangers to the Scottish Premier League title.
Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Gerrard termed the incident as ‘cruel.’
It still pains me and as you say it is a bruise. It was a learning experience. It is something that I always will take responsibility for. That’s the moment I look back on and think ‘if only I had got that right, it would be so much better.’
It definitely had an effect on me mentally for some time. I don’t know whether it was months or years – still to this day it doesn’t feel great.
At that time, Liverpool had gone for over 20 years without winning the English top-flight. Gerrard’s trophy haul at Liverpool included the famous comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final.
The 41-year-old is currently the manager of Premier League side Aston Villa. A finish in the top-half of the table looks to be firmly in his sights. Villa are currently 15th with 36 points, four less than Brighton and Hove Albion in 10th.

Suarez better than Torres
In an earlier report by Sports Brief, Gerrard had boldly claimed that Luis Suarez was a better striker than Fernando Torres. He even went a step further to say that Suarez was the best player he ever played with at Liverpool.
The Uruguayan striker had devastating goal returns during his stint at Liverpool. He found the back of the net 82 times before he left for Barcelona in 2014.
