  • This weekend’s round of DStv Premiership matches has a lot riding on them with the end of the season in sight
  • With Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates concerned with international duty, seven fixtures will be played out across the country
  • Whether it is trying to finish runners-up, consolidate a Top 8 place or move away from the relegation zone, it promises to be an intriguing weekend of league action

With the 2021/22 DStv Premiership approaching its conclusion, this weekend’s round of matches will give a clearer indication of what the final log standings might just look like.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will not feature in league matches as they are currently on duty in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively. However, every other team will be in action in what is a moving weekend of sorts.

TS Galaxy will host Maritzburg United in an important relegation-avoidance encounter on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. Galaxy is in 14th place on 22 points, just two ahead of Swallows FC, who are in the relegation/play-off position of 15th. Chippa is barely ahead, one place and one point above Galaxy (12th, 23 points).

Kicking off at the same time is Golden Arrows versus Sekhukhune United. Arrows (9th, 31 points) and United (10th, 30 points) are battling for a spot in next season’s MTN 8 tournament.

Later, Stellenbosch FC will take on an embattled Kaizer Chiefs at 5pm. The Maroons are in sixth place on 36 points, and could realistically but improbably finish as runners-up. The Amakhosi, beset by off-field legal issues and having just fired Stuart Baxter, are fourth on 39 points, and will also have designs on finishing second in a disappointing season.

Marumo Gallants and SuperSport United will round of Saturday’s action at 7.30pm. The 11th-placed Gallants are four points off the magical eighth place on 30, where United currently resides, with the latter looking to consolidate and possibly move higher than the position.

Sunday afternoon’s headline clash is Swallows FC vs Baroka FC. The equation is very simple for Baroka with a paltry 18 points: defeat Swallows and they will move off the foot of the table into 15th, with Swallows moving into the automatic relegation spot.

At the same time, a KwaZulu-Natal derby will unfold between Royal AM. The surprise package that is Royal is in second place on the table with 44 points, and a win would go a long way in ensuring that they finish there. Amazulu, in seventh place on 35 points, is looking to remain safe within the Top 8 positions.

Owen da Gama Lands New Coaching Role, Appointed by Sekhukhune United on the Same Day Stuart Baxter Is Fired

Owen Da Gama will make a return to the DStv Premiership after he was unveiled earlier today as Sekhukhune United’s new co-coach.

As reported on Sports Brief, Da Gama coached TS Galaxy at the beginning of the season but was let go in September.

It was revealed yesterday that Sekhukhune United have appointed Da Gama as a co-coach, working alongside MacDonald Makhubedu.
