  • The legendary Ghanaian was relieved of his duties as captain few days to the tournament in Egypt

Asamoah Gyan has accused handlers of the national team for betrayal after he was stripped off the Black Stars captaincy before the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt 2019.

The then coach, Kwesi Appiah made changes to the leadership of the team by handing Andre Ayew the captain's armband, leaving many shocked with the decision.

Asamoah Gyan in an interview with Asaase Radio in Accra disclosed he was betrayed, hence the reason he had wanted to pull out of the tournament.

“I felt betrayed when the captaincy was taken from me because the people who know what actually ensued will tell you that they know that I was betrayed; that’s all I can say," Gyan told Asaase Radio as quoted by GHANASoccernet.

Gyan wanted to be excused from the tournament but for the intervention of President Nana Akufo-Addo, he stayed and made only two appearances.

The Black Stars had a poor tournament, exiting the competition at the round of 16 after a penalty shootout defeat to Tunisia.

Asamoah Gyan, who is Ghana's all-time leading scorer has not played for the Black Stars since the tournament ended in 2019.

Asamoah Gyan tells Ghanaian to lower their expectations before World Cup

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that legendary Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to lower their expectations of the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana made a return to the Mundial after missing out on the last edition and after qualifying at the expense of West African neighbors Nigeria, many believe the Black Stars can travel far in the global showpiece.

However, Gyan, a veteran of three World Cups and Africa's leading scorer at the Mundial, wants the citizenry to be measured with their expectations of the Black Stars.
