- Rulani Mokwena has used the advice that Jürgen Klopp once gave him on how to deal with losing a game
Mamelodi Sundowns may have suffered their first defeat in the CAF Champions League, but co-coach Rulani Mokwena is confident they can turn things around.
Speaking after the game, Mokwena spoke about how Sundowns lacked aggression in the first half but put on a much better showing during the second 45 minutes.
Petro de Luanda scored two goals in the first half to Sundowns’ one, to win the game 2-1, Times LIVE reported.
Sundowns did get a crucial away goal and will be looking to make that count when they host the Angolan side next week. As reported by iDiski Times, Mokwena also remembered some advice that Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp once gave him for times like these.
“Jurgen Klopp told me, ‘coach, if you want to succeed in football, lose the right match’. And I think we lost the right match because it doesn’t knock us out, we still have a chance to make it.”
Mokwena also briefly commented on the equaliser that was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee, in a statement released on Masandwana’s website.
“We had done the most difficult part which was to score an away goal and the most important thing was to try to win the second half, which we thought we played a lot better.
We were a little bit unfortunate with the goal – the equaliser from the VAR but we are okay to go to Johannesburg with a 2 – 1 scoreline. We take the away goal and we can definitely score and I think Petro also knows that there’s a goal in Pretoria.”

FootballMamelodi Sundowns suffer defeat to Petro de Luanda, Video Assistant Referee denies Masandawana an equaliser
Mamelodi Sundowns will feel hard done by a late Video Assistant Referee decision which saw them suffer their first CAF Champions League defeat. Masandawana were beaten by Angola's Petro de Luanda 2-1 away from home but were denied a late equaliser due to VAR.
Lyle Lakay gave Mamelodi Sundowns the perfect start when he scored in the first five minutes. The South African defender produced one of his trademark freekicks, which deflected the wall to find its way into the back of the net.
Petro de Luanda equalised ten minutes later when Tiago Azulāo finished smartly from close range. The rest of the first half resembled a pinball game as both sides had numerous chances to take the lead, Sports Brief reported.
