FootballBest Teams in Africa Named: Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns Placed in the Top 10
- CAF Champions League champions Al Ahly is ranked as the best club in Africa according to a report by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS)
- The report tracked the results of football clubs across the world from 01 April 2021 to 31 March 2022
- Mamelodi Sundowns is one of only two southern African teams in the top 10 of clubs across the continent
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics has released the list of the top 10 teams on the African continent as part of its global lists.
To no one surprise, Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly is at the top of the pile. The classification was compiled after the IFFHS researching results from 01 April 2021 until 31 March 2022.
As reported by KickOff, the Red Devils represented CAF at the FIFA Club World Cup in February this year, where they sealed bronze medals after defeating Saudi giants Al-Hilal 4-0 in the third-place final.
While their 213 points ensure them the No. 1 spot on the continent, they are not the only Egyptian side in the top 10, with Pyramids FC and Zamalek occupying fifth and seventh positions, respectively.
2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup winners Zamalek are on 132.5 points, making them the 97th best team in the world, per the IFFHS. Pyramids, who signed Bafana Bafana star Fagrie Lakay in January, hold a slightly higher position than their domestic rivals with 135 points to their name.
Only two teams from outside the north African region feature, namely Mamelodi Sundowns and Atletico Petro de Luanda.
The Chloorkop outfit has been incredibly successful in the DStv Premiership over the past few years, having won the league in six of the past eight campaigns, including four in a row from 2017/18 to 2020/21.

DStv Premiership match report: Peter Shalulile hattrick fires Mamelodi Sundowns to 6-0 win over Golden Arrows
Mamelodi Sundowns was in searing form as it dispatched Golden Arrows 6-0 in the DStv Premiership this afternoon.
A hat-trick from Peter Shalulile - his 19th, 20th and 21st league goals of the season - plus goals from Gaston Sirino, Pavol Safranko and Kermit Erasmus saw the Brazilians march ruthlessly towards their fifth consecutive league title, a record extension.
The win means that Mamelodi Sundowns could officially win the league with two more wins or earlier if other results go their way.
