  • Unai Emery was in charge of Arsenal after Arsene Wenger left the club, but the Spaniard says the fans were not patient
  • Emery led Arsenal to the Europa League final in his first full season in charge, but the club supporters called for his sack
  • According to the tactician, Arsenal fans found it difficult to understand that there needed to be an evolution

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has stated that fans of the Premier League club were not patient with him during his time in charge of the players, 90min reports.

Emery has taken time out to reflect on the time he spent at the Emirates Stadium, claiming the club supporters could not endure his lengthy pattern of a rebuild.

The Spanish tactician took over from Arsene Wenger in 2018 and was in charge until November 2019 after losing in the Europa League final in his only full season at the club.

Emery told The Athletic:

“It was a difficult moment for any coach coming in, to establish yourself.
“Certain players who had been important, but were not any longer, found that difficult to understand. The fans also found it difficult to understand that there needed to be an evolution. Changes were needed, and I began those changes.”
“It was not an easy process. The fans did not have patience. [Granit] Xhaka had problems with the fans and in the dressing room where other experienced players did not understand his role as captain. Xhaka was an important player for me — he was a good person, very committed to his coach.
“The club was happy with me, but the fans were calling for a change, and it had to happen.”

Arsenal suffer injury blow

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney's season could be over after he suffered a knee injury during international duty.

The Scotland international is understood to have reported back to the Arsenal camp with an issue that will likely keep him out for some time.

Tierney played the entire 90 minutes of Scotland’s friendly matches against Poland and Austria.

The former Celtic star is now set to miss the better part of Arsenal's push to qualify for the Champions League and Scotland’s upcoming crunch World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine.
