FootballLiverpool Fans Fume After Learning Manchester-Born Referee Will Officiate Clash vs Man City
- Anthony Taylor will be the referee in charge of the potential title decider involving Manchester City and Liverpool on Sunday
- A section of fans are however discontent by the selection of the match officials for that game as some of the officials have history with Jurgen Klopp
- Liverpool are only a point behind Manchester City with eight games of the season to go
Liverpool fans have taken to social media to lament on the choice of referee for the crunch match against Manchester City this weekend.
Only a point separates the top 2 sides in England going into the business end of the season, and Sunday’s meeting has been tipped to be the title decider.
Liverpool are well in the race to win the quadruple this season, and a win at the Etihad on Sunday would go a long way in keeping them on course for their objectives.
Ahead of the mammoth clash, however, an interesting sub plot has emerged as fans noted that the Reds could possibly be at a disadvantage because of the match officials selected for the game.
As confirmed by the Premier League, Manchester-born duo Anthony Taylor and Paul Tierney will be referee and VAR respectively.
The fourth official will be Andre Marriner, while Gary Beswick and Andy Nunn will be linesmen.
As expected, Liverpool fans read into the match officials line up as some claimed Manchester City had the advantage.
The fact that Anthony Taylor hails from Manchester left a lot of fans suspicious, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is not the biggest fan of Paul Tierney.
In December, Klopp blatantly told Tierney, “I have no problems with any referees, only you,” after Liverpool were frustrated to a 2-2 draw by Tottenham Hotspur.
Taylor’s record in Liverpool matches
Interestingly enough, Liverpool matches where Anthony Taylor has officiated often ends in the Merseyside club’s favor.
Taylor, who hails from Wythenshawe in Manchester, has overseen 47 matches involving Liverpool, and the Reds have won 27 of those matches, and lost nine times.
He has refereed a Liverpool vs Manchester United fixture three times, with Liverpool winning in two of those occasions (5-0 and 4-2). The other game was a 0-0 stalemate.
