Mamelodi Sundowns will not only represent South Africa but all of Southern Africa, in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
Sundowns booked their spot in the final eight, topping Group A ahead of Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly.
Al Ahly left it later to book their spot, beating Al Hilal 1-0 last night. Al Hilal went into the game knowing that they stood a slight chance of pipping Al Ahly to the last spot, provided they beat the Egyptians by a big margin.
Hussein El Shahat scored in the 74th minute for the Egyptians, though, to ensure they would win the encounter 1-0, Soccer Laduma reported.
The draw for the quarterfinals will now take place tomorrow afternoon. The draw for the CAF Confederation Cup will also be held tomorrow. Orlando Pirates are still in that tournament.
Of the eight teams that have made it, six teams are all from North Africa, while two are from Southern Africa. Sundowns and Petro de Luanda are the only Southern African sides heading into the draw.
